My Simplified Life podcast releases two episodes per week featuring authors and changemakers. Every interview reveals life lessons we can embrace and stories of others that build empathy.
In this episode of My Simplified Life, I’m chatting with Dr. Jessi Gold about the importance of mental health conversations, the stigma surrounding them, and the role of empathy in understanding emotional struggles. We talked about the challenges of burnout in healthcare, the significance of self-disclosure in therapy, and the impact of societal issues on mental well-being. Dr. Gold shares insights from her memoir, How Do You Feel?, emphasizing the need for open dialogue and sustainability in mental health services.
My love for How Do You Feel?…
This is such an honest book and truly highlights not only the humanity in medicine but in what an incredible doctor Jessi Gold is. I found Dr. Gold extremely relatable from her wanting her therapist to like her to taking on more and more work to wanting to be the best at all she did, all the while she has also been working towards helping healthcare workers get the mental health help they need and de-stigmatize mental health for healthcare workers.
I enjoyed the patient stories alongside her own story and found myself wanting to know what happens with each patient and ultimately crying at the end...happy tears but also in the realization of truly how much our healthcare professionals are working through in all they do. I hope that I've always shown my gratitude to the doctors and nurses who have helped me along the way and know that when I asked my own therapist how she's doing, that it's something not all do, but it's something I'll continue to do.
