Action Is The Antidote To Despair
Continuing to take action and be inspired
As I read Democracy In Retrograde the first time, I wrote and underlined all over it! I’m so glad I did.
We have seen another week of literal batshit craziness go down but we’ve all started to speak up…and they’re finally listening. Phone calls to Senators are literally breaking the phone system and causing voice mailboxes to be full. There is power in our voices, opinions and numbers.
The simple act of making a phone call is creating the change we need. What other small changes can we do collectively that will create even greater change?
Section 3 - So, What Can We Do?
We first need to define our values and goals. What is it that we want out of where we live? What’s the ideal place we live in? Of course my ideal place would be beachfront property but I digress…
I grew up in a small town of 27,000 and now reside in a city of 1M. It sounds like a lot of people but I till have the small town feel here because I usually run into someone no matter where I go. This used to happen growing up every time we went to the grocery store and a two item trip would take an hour because my mom would talk to everyone she knew. I love living in a place where neighbors know each other and has that “small town feel” but I love the diversity of the big city that I live in.
My values statement…
I value INTEGRITY because I want those who represent us to be honest and for ALL.
I value EMPATHY and INCLUSION because if we listen and understand what others have gone through, we will become more inclusive.
I value FREEDOM, TRUTH, EQUITY and RELIABILTY because we should ALL be able to rely on our freedoms, be told the truth, tell the truth and live lives that are equitable.
Section 4 - Your Civic Personality
Surprise, surprise…I’m a leader and creator! Neither of these came as a surprise to me, although I can see myself fitting into all 4 categories in some way (which is probably why they’re so close in score). This part spoke out to me immensely…
“If you want to get something done, you simply get it done. You don’t pretend to be an expert in something, you become one. You are willing to put in the time and energy to really study something and become thoroughly informed about it.”
What is your civic personality? Do you find that it fits?
