Join Sami Sage and I on Tuesday, February 25th at 12pm PST/3pm EST to discuss Democracy In Retrograde! This event will be recorded and also turned into a podcast episode on My Simplified Life.
I read Democracy In Retrograde back in July and am revisiting it along with my many notes that I took throughout the book. For all of the Books That Build selections, I’d like to share with you my thoughts as we read together to start our discussion in advance of the live meetup.
This book, along with following Emily and Sami, has made a huge impact in my life and is the reason why I have launched this book club and the California Moms For Good group.
Section One - Initial Reflection
My main fears as I read this book were rights being taken away and the wrong people being elected into office. Those fears are now realities. At the time I felt that my life was missing more liked-minded people, more friends and overall time. I have two kids and my hope for them and their future is to encourage them to vote, speak up and fight for equal rights.
Section Two - Democracy In Retrograde
Short Journal Exercise - I’d love to learn what you feel most hopeless about. Here’s what I journaled back in July. Please excuse the language but I’m going to be real with you on how I was feeling and still do feel, even moreso these days.
The division between the two parties with MAGA fueling the right and focusing on elevating white hetero men and the potential rights of women, LGBTQ+, religion and healthcare being taken away. Those before us have worked so hard to gain the rights we have and even some of us have worked hard at gaining current rights and yet these f*ckers think they can do what they please. They are racist, bigots.
Through the 5 lenses:
The rights haven’t been taken away.
We still have time to come together and fight.
We have to do this for our kids.
We are lucky to still have the freedom to fight.
15 minutes later…
We do still have the right and freedom to fight. We can still bring people together.
Have you started reading along? What are your main concerns and struggles? Let’s start sharing in the comments!
