I’m happy. Yet, I’ve felt unsettled for some reason. Am I doing what I’m meant to be doing? Is what I’m doing enough and making a true difference? If I dabble in something “outside of my lane”, then am I making a wrong move? If I want to do more, do I have shiny object syndrome or simply dreams to chase?
I’ve been looking forward to our Fall break trip for months…because I book these things way in advance. We are en route back home from an amazing week in Maui…truly one of my happiest places on earth. I love the ocean, sitting on the beach, the closeness we feel as a family playing in the water and snorkeling together. I also love the slow mornings with my coffee, book and even my laptop because suddenly my mind feels clear and I want to take on new things.
My Beach Read - New Happy
I brought New Happy by Stephanie Harrison (
), a book that I pre-ordered but hadn’t gotten around to reading. On the flight out, I devoured half of it and finished the rest on the beach…the light bulbs have been going off! The questions Stephanie has you ask yourself to define your wisdom and talents are extremely similar to the questions I ask to define your speaking topics and expertise. In other words, I feel like I’m also helping people discover their wisdom, talents and essentially what will make them happy. (Who doesn’t want that to be what they do for a living?!)Stephanie brings up “the curse of knowledge”…this is why it is so hard to define our own topics and expertise! Once we know something, it becomes hard to imagine not knowing it. I knew this was/is a struggle for many because this is why my clients come to me, but I had no idea that there was actual science behind it. It’s literally the reason why I wrote How To Get On Podcasts…to help people get out of their own way and see the knowledge they have to share.
Your knowledge extends to more than what you know and have learned. It encompasses your life story and what you’ve been through. From New Happy, “Wise people choose to see pain and struggles in a different way; not just as an experience they personally need to get through, but something that can be transformed to help another person.”
I share all of this because this book helped me realize not only why I’m doing what I’m doing (alongg with why I light up most when I’m onboarding a client), but also why I am the way I am. I experienced loss as a child and that taught me early on to lead with compassion, empathy and sensitivity, to care about all I come in contact with and to always listen closely when someone shares their story with me. It’s the reason I want to tell the stories of more people, read books, learn about authors behind books, help people reach one another on a greater scale. I am doing what I’m meant to be doing AND my want and need for growth isn’t shiny object syndrome…it’s who I am and it makes sense that I would want to scale what I have already created.

Shoutouts
A huge congrats to my friend, Zelly Reskin on the launch of her debut novel this week, Not Yours To Keep!
I’m co-hosting a virtual fundraiser on Tuesday, October 8th for my good friend, Stacy Bernal. Stacy is running for Utah State Senator, D3. I interviewed Stacy back on episode 91 about her career, what it’s like raising an autistic child and much more. I’m so proud of her to be running and to have the opportunity to support her. Join us!
This week’s podcast featured
and her incredible work as an actress and filmmaker. Her upcoming film, Wake Up Maggie, is a love letter to her mother who passed away from FTD and is a coming of middle age story that is utterly beautiful. I’m honored to be a producer on this film and to work with Katie. WUM’s GoFundMe is less than $7K shy of hitting the $100K goal!I have to give a shoutout to my friend Steph Hockersmith (better known as Pie Lady Books) because her creations are gorgeous works of art and I’m simply in awe of her. If you’re an author, I highly recommend you check out her gorgeous pies…a huge bonus is that she reviews every book that she turns into a pie. She’s not only talented but an amazing human being as well!
