It hit me the other day that I talk a lot about storytelling, the benefits of podcast guesting, repurposing your interviews into marketing content, but something I don’t talk about is the money behind all of this. I decided to break it down in an Instagram post and want to share it with all of you.
Calculating Your Cost Per Lead For Podcast Interviews
Whether you're a business owner or an author, you should be considering how much your cost per lead is. How much is it costing you to find people who are going to buy your book, product or service? I read this article on Zero Alchemy that speaks to authors and what a good cost per lead is based on Facebook Ads or giveaways and your royalties. The article says $1-$2.50 per lead is pretty good and then I did my own math…we can do better!
You can pitch yourself to be a podcast guest for free OR you can pay $22 for my book, How To Get On Podcasts, to learn how to do it. Either way, your cost per lead is going to be extremely low...like close to 0.
We figure out your cost per lead based on how many listeners there are for the interviews you do, therefore if you're doing this on your own, the cost is minimal to nothing. Working with an agency like The MLG Collective® costs anywhere from $3,000 to $24,000 depending on the package and amount of time we work together.
Our Podcast Book Tours™ guarantee you a minimum of 15 interviews (we always exceed that!). Our monthly retainer packages guarantee a minimum of 3 interviews per month and go for 6-12 months.
Every month I calculate how many podcast listeners every interview gets based on real data. I have taken that data and divided it by the cost of the package clients have paid...here is what I've found.
Author clients are reaching a minimum of 50,000 podcast listeners, while our greatest reach was for a client who reached over 765K listeners with his tour. The cost per lead for authors ranges from $0.006 (that's less than a penny!) to $0.12...this is well below the $1-$2.50 per lead that the article I read said wasn’t bad.
For retainer clients, they're reaching hundreds of thousands into the millions with cost per leads being $0.10 to $0.004 (again, less than a penny).
Podcast interviews are one of the most financially efficient way to not only get leads but then have a ton of marketing content at your fingertips!
The numbers speak for themselves!!!

You’ve spoken and I’ve listened. I’m excited to announce that we now are offering Mini Podcast Book Tours™! You still get a 1:1 strategy meeting with me, branded media kit, Spotify playlist, transcripts and quotes but we guarantee a smaller number of podcast interviews. This is great if you’re wanting to get started, but don’t want to go all in and also allows you to be armed with everything you need PLUS have some interviews under your belt if you want to continue on your own. I’ll be announcing this to my social media followers later today, so you’re the first to know!
HTGOP Course
Did you know I launched a course that is the perfect companion to How To Get On Podcasts? It offers videos and tutorials in addition to what you get when you read the book.
