Our final week before Books That Build meets with Sami Sage!
Section 5: An Action Plan
How do we take action? Many of us have been calling our Senators and Representatives over the past month, but how did that fall into line with your civic calendar as you created your action plan in Democracy In Retrograde? Have you been networking in some way? I find it interesting that last summer I was very focused on my local elected officials which included my new City Councilmember and my Congressman. I hadn’t even written down, let alone even considered the need or want to get in touch with my Senators. Things in our government hadn’t seemed to warrant me to take such action…now it has.
I’ve never shied away from political conversations but I’d also venture to say that we’ve never felt the need to have such hard conversations before. It used to be that you were Republican or Democrat and everyone respected that. MAGA has brought about a new kind of Republican party and it’s no longer about laws but about hatred for other people. This is what is making these conversations so hard. I’ve been told “I’ve always respected your political opinions, so why can’t you respect mine?”. That’s pretty easy to answer for me. I am someone who is for the rights of ALL, not a select group of people, therefore you really can’t argue with my opinions because I’m not excluding anyone like you are. Plain and simple.
Are you having more conversations? I’m certainly having more with friends and even strangers online and they’ve been productive and comforting.
Raising Civic Minded Children
My kids are 8 and 9 and have been civically active for years now. They’ve canvassed on behalf of our now Mayor, represented Moms Demand Action, attended our Mayor’s Oath of Office, watched the DNC, participated in Women for Harris calls, helped me write postcards, have attended City Council meetings, attended local PAC events for Back To Basics in San Jose and more. It took me close to 40 years to do such things, so they’re definitely starting early and I hope it’s setting the stage for who they become as adults.
Being civic minded isn’t only about voting and elections, it’s about standing up for what you believe in and helping others.

Section 6 - The Future Is Written By Us
WE are creating the future. Sure, right now it might feel like the DOGEbags are currently writing it for us, but I promise you that as we fight, make our calls, speak out and protest, we are truly writing our own future. Decades from now, there will be history books written about us, our grandchildren and beyond will read about this time and many will wonder what we did…did we cheer for this guy and all the harm he’s doing or did we take a stand and fight like hell?
