Yes to this! Thank you for being committed to depth and to treating writers with the respect they deserve. I always think of Terry Gross, who goes through an artist’s entire catalogue before an interview—even if I don’t know an artist’s music or movies or books, I know it will be an interesting listen and I will be blown away by the depth of conversation. And the method worked out pretty well for Terry, too. In a world that’s flooded with fluff, less is going to be more.

Thank you, Elizabeth! You really hit it in regards to the depth that a conversation can go when the host does their homework. We already live in a world with too much surface level "stuff"!

And it totally makes all the difference, Michelle! I still think of tips from your book at least weekly and I'm constantly recommending it!

I love this post - you are so right. I listen to a lot of podcasts that interview authors (3-5 a week), and it's always apparent if the host has read the book or not, so kudos to you for taking a stand to read a book if you're promoting it. This will only build trust with your listeners.

I get that publishing is a business. There's another whole industry around book promotion. Both seem to focus on running up the numbers. I've become wary of buying books promoted on podcasts because more often than not, I have ended up being disappointed even when I remind myself that what is a good book to one may not be to another.

Looking forward to your series on this topic!

Thank you SO much N.J. I know that my listeners trust me when I recommend something because they know I’ve done my homework but it seems many people don’t do that or see that. I know authors need promotion (I’ve had to promote my book too) but seeing a host promote a book they haven’t read is like an influencer hocking a skin care product they don’t use. We should demand more when it comes to hosts and social media.
